The veterans community homes in these two cities were renovated by HGTV talent and a host of volunteers. Change the World: American Heroes, an HGTV special about the renovations and the lives of the American heroes who live in these homes, will air on Veterans Day, November 11, 8/7c.
Located in the historic Frankford District of Philadelphia, the house at 4245 Romain St. is home to transitioning veterans, part of a program operated by the Pennsylvania American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans Corporation. In the three-bedroom townhouse, homeless veterans receive food and shelter plus assistance with finding work and a permanent place to live. While in the program, residents share in cooking, cleaning and home maintenance. Since 1994, nearly 400 veterans have successfully left the program and have gone on to become productive members of the workforce.

In 1994, Desert Storm veteran Hence J. Forland bought the home that would become the Windsor Transitional House with the hope of creating a place for veterans to find emergency shelter and transitional housing. After his own experience returning from active duty, Forland decided to help other veterans in their often difficult transition back to civilian life. Windsor Transitional House offers spiritual support, transportation, job placement services and aid for substance abuse. The two-story, four-bedroom home, which is located within walking distance of the John Cochran Veterans' Administration Medical Center, also gives veterans easy access to public transportation, groceries and community resources.
