Hopi Quilting History

Simply Quilts : Episode QLT-807 -- More Projects »
Though quilt making waned in popularity throughout the United States from the 1940s until the 1970s, it thrived in the Hopi Mesa communities in Arizona. Quilts adorn the Hopi villages that quilt historian Carolyn O'Bagy Davis has visited. Brought to the Hopi villages by missionaries in the late 1800s, quilting was initially taken up by Hopi women instead of the traditional sewers of the tribe--the men. Hopi men made quilts as well, however. Here are some examples of these special quilts.
