This multi-functional laundry room offers a place to wash, dry and fold clothes, as well as ample storage for paper goods and bulk items. Its focal point is the Energy Star rated washer and dryer in deep burgundy.

Manmade quartz counters provide an eco-friendly work surface that's also stain-resistant, heat-resistant and anti-microbial. Interior designer Linda Woodrum likes the surfaces because they're made of high-quality recycled material.

The room features white cabinets above the washer and dryer and under the window. These all-wood cabinets are well constructed and designed to last. "One goal of green design is to keep things out of landfills," says Woodrum. "These cabinets will still be here 50 years from now."

Woodrum chose walnut veneer planking for the first floor. This eco-friendly veneer covers a dense inner layer of recycled wood fibers using up to two-thirds less harvested wood than alternative wood flooring options. The wood is harvested from managed forests.

There are two fun, functional, elements in the room: a fold-out towel rack and a row of hooks for beach bags, towels or cloth shopping bags. Got damp kitchen towels? Throw them over the rack, open the window and let the air dry them.
