In this bright and cheerful bunk room the bed takes center stage, with its frame featuring jumping porpoises. It was handcrafted from recycled lumber by the same woodworker who made the bed in the master suite, and painted with low-VOC paint so it will not off gas toxic chemicals.For the window covering, interior designer Linda Woodrum used eco-friendly fabric to create a tailored valence with oversized aqua and white checks. This same fabric was used for the curtain that hangs between the bedroom and the play room.
The multi-purpose cubby is the ideal spot for everything from studying to video games. Woodrum covered the cushy bean bags in outdoor fabric, which is durable, resists stains and can be removed for washing.
Two large windows bring in light, highlighting the room's green and aqua crayon colors. The windows are among the most efficient on the market. They reduce the amount of glare and heat gain through high-performance glass and are surrounded with additional flashing to help prevent moisture problems.
Sand-colored carpet of recycled nylon grounds the space. The sitting area, with its child-sized table and chairs, makes space for young readers. The table is embellished with a white bird lamp, which is made from recycled tin; it gets a bright pop of color from a green shade.
A white dresser holds a recycled glass lamp with a creamy white shade. Recycled papier-mâché crabs dart up the walls and onto the dresser in a race to beat the tide. "This room is all about nature in the Low Country, of which we have a great abundance," says Woodrum.
Artistic renderings of tree trunks hold markers, pencils, paper and favorite books under a blue gingham pin-up board.
Woodrum likes the way this room departs from the rest of the house, with its bright colors and wildlife theme. The porpoises, birds, turtles and crabs evoke a childhood of outdoor exploration that results in a lifelong love of nature.
