Earthworm Colony

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-223 -- More Projects »
Landscaper Jamie McMurray tells how children can have fun in the garden, while doing something educational.

Materials:

black construction paper
glass jar
lid for jar (poke air holes in it)
masking tape

Steps:

  1. Put compost of grass, leaves and garden clippings in the bottom of the glass jar.

  2. Add garden soil. Alternate layers until the jar is half full.

  3. Screw on the lid. Wrap the jar with construction paper and secure with masking tape.

  4. Dig a hole in a moist spot in the back yard to find earthworms for your colony. (It is best to search at night because they are more active.)

  5. Place the earthworms in the jar. To view their activities, remove the black construction paper. At other times keep the jar covered to give the worms darkness.
