Gardening Q & A: Keeping Birds From Eating Wildflower Seeds

Grow It! : Episode GRW-207 -- More Projects »
How can I keep birds from eating my wildflower seeds?

Try hiding the seeds in a mixture of soil and composted manure.

Materials:

a bucket
clay or adobe soil
composted manure
wildflower seeds

  1. Mix a couple of handfuls of manure with the adobe soil in a large bucket.

  2. Add water and mix until the manure and soil form a gummy mass.

  3. Add the wildflower seeds, evenly dispersing them in the soil mixture. (Make sure there are enough seeds to cover the desired area.)

  4. Take large clumps of the mixture and grate them over a large screen--small pieces of the soil and seed mixture will fall through. Dry these pieces in the sun, then scatter them over the landscape. The seeds will now be concealed in the mud, hidden from birds.
