To an extent, dogs and cats can help a gardener keep critters out of the garden, but they often enjoy either digging in your vegetable patch or using your flower bed for a litter box. Here are a few tips to curb their desire to mess up your garden (these tips may not be successful with all pets). Construct a fence around the garden. This can be costly and hinder gardening, so use your discretion. Certain smells may deter your pet: try blood meal or manure from large predatory animals of the zoo variety. Store-bought sprays can also be helpful in this area, but they need to be reapplied after watering the garden.
