Q&A: Kale

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-520 -- More Projects »
Q: What's that cabbage-like plant that I see growing everywhere in the late fall and early winter?

A: The plant is a member of the cabbage family and is called ornamental kale. It can tolerate temperatures in the 20s as well as a fair amount of shade. It's easy to grow in pots or in the ground, and it can grow as large as two feet across. During the cooler months, it's also rarely bothered by insects. The margins of its green to blue-green foliage can be tinged with colors from white to red to purple, and, while it is edible, it doesn't taste very good.
