Q&A: Salad Greens

Grow It! : Episode GRW-601 -- More Projects »
What's the best way to plant salad greens?

An ideal way to grow salad greens is in 4'x4' raised beds about eight inches in height. Fill the beds with good, fast-draining potting soil. Two of the easiest greens to grow are Swiss chard and romaine. Sow Swiss chard seeds in a straight line about 1/2" deep, and two months later, the plants will be ready for harvesting. Plant the romaine seeds in rows, eight to 10 inches apart. Use a 1"x2" board as a guideline for rows. Create a shallow trench along the edge of the board, scatter the seeds evenly into the trench and barely cover with soil. Although lettuce seeds are very fine, some lettuce growers now package pellet-sized seeds in capsules, making the seeds larger for easier planting.
