Pearl's pruned shrubbery display his knack for whimsy.
When thinking of topiary gardens, most of us conjure up images of formal European grounds that feature shrubbery trimmed into pyramids and cylinders. Rebecca's Garden visits a stunning topiary garden in South Carolina that's anything but stuffy.

Pearl Fryar has a natural knack for topiary and has created this very unique garden without any formal training. His garden has won local contests and draws curious visitors from all over. He began tinkering with topiary as a way to make himself and his family proud.

Pearl's specialty is abstract topiary and features numerous heart-shaped pieces. He uses bamboo, wire (including coat hangers), electrical ties and clippers to create his masterpieces. Through the years, he has become a master of taking advantage of bark, stems and greenery to create this garden art. "Within my plants, you're going to see the theme of togetherness," he says.
