If you want a little less girth on your tree's canopy, the trident maple (Acer buergerianum) is a good choice. Tolerant of drought and heat, this handsome maple makes a great small lawn or patio shade tree. As the tree ages, the gray bark becomes multicolored and starts defoliating. Mature size is 25 to 35 feet tall, 15 to 25 feet wide. USDA Zones 5 to 8(9).
