A great way to set the fall season on fire is with a beautiful viburnum. This is a shrub that not only provides color, but flowers, fruit and foliage at different times during the year. It's definitely a shrub for all seasons.
Viburnums begin their show in the early spring, producing showy, often fragrant blossoms. Some flowers are delicate and float horizontally along the branches, while others produce big, puffy snowballs. Once the flowers have faded, they are replaced with colorful berries during the summer months.
A very popular variety is the nannyberry viburnum. It has green glossy leaves that turn bronze in the fall. If you like the color of the leaf but don't like the shape, you might like the common snowball viburnum. Its leaves are the same color, but the shape is more like a maple leaf. The compact cranberry bush also has maple-shaped leaves. Its beautiful berries provide food for birds throughout winter.
