Excerpt from: Native Trees, Shrubs & Vines: A Guide to Using, Growing and Propagating North American Woody Plants

by William Cullina (Houghton Mifflin)

"...Field-dug trees and shrubs are for the most part best handled before they begin growing in the spring or after growth slows in the fall. This gives the root system time to re-establish before the stressful summer growing season.

As an added benefit, getting the tree situated before it leafs out will allow it to adjust the thickness and size of its leaves to the light levels of the chosen spot. Often these vary quite a bit from the place it is being grown, and plants already in leaf may drop their leaves or have them burned off as they try to adjust to a new place."
