Removable Trellis

Surprise Gardener : Episode SPG-304 -- More Projects »
Homeowners Tom and Julie have little privacy in their backyard, but this project--building lightweight, portable trellises--will solve the problem. By setting the trellises on top of walls, they can create privacy whenever they want it. The trellises can be removed easily and used anywhere, which makes them ideal for small yards or temporary residences.

These low walls create a privacy problem for homeowners Tom and Julie because the view affords a glimpse of the neighbors' yard as well.

Trellis structures can be purchased at a home improvement store and modified for this project with very little equipment or effort.

The best trellis for this job is a standard 2 x 8, redwood trellis which is attached to redwood planks on the top and bottom. The size of those planks will vary with individual wall thickness.

Secure the trellis by attaching those redwood rails using four or five 2-inch galvanized screws on each side.

Saw standard 2" x 6" redwood planks into four four-foot pieces to use as the vertical boards that hold the trellis in place.

Attach vertical boards, called saddle boards, to the ends of the trellis by placing two screws in either end of the top and bottom rails. Do this for each side of the trellis.

Set the trellis on the wall and you're done. It's that easy.

The finished trellises are attractive and functional.
