An oscillating sprinkler is perfect for beginners.
"Lazy Homeowner" Mike Ferrara explains the basics of lawn and garden irrigation.

  • There are many varieties of hoses available to help you take the water where you need it.

  • You will need a hose management system of some kind to keep the hose well maintained and contained.

  • Some of the more specialty hoses are called soaker hoses. These are used to water a new tree or a place in the garden that needs a lot of water over a long period of time.

  • Another type of specialty hose is a drip system. This will slowly drip water into a flower bed and can be set up with timers so that things get watered on a regular basis.

  • When dealing with a regular hose it is a good idea to change out the washers once a year, as they tend to dry up and become ineffective.

  • When it comes to sprinklers be sure you have the right tool for the job. A great starter sprinkler is an oscillating one (see photo above). You have good control and it is easy to use.

  • Tractor sprinklers are good for a large area.

  • A round spray sprinkler is good for a small area that needs a lot of water.

  • For the best control, use a hand wand. Look for one with a cutoff switch on the handle.

  • For people just starting out you will want to get a good hose, an oscillating sprinkler and a hand wand.
