Q&A: Planting in Clay

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-609 -- More Projects »
Q: What's the best method for planting trees and shrubs in heavy clay soil?

A: Start by selecting only those trees and shrubs that will adapt to growing in heavy clay. You'll then need to focus on preparing the proper planting hole. When planting in heavy clay, dig a wide but shallow, saucer-shaped hole. Dig the hole to a depth that's roughly equivalent to half the height of the plant's root ball: the real trick to successful growing in heavy clay is to never plant too deeply. Leave as much as half of the root ball exposed, then mulch the exposed portion well. Clay soils retain water, so pay special attention to your watering habits and avoid waterlogging soil.
