This stand usually requires a hole to be drilled in the trunk. Most tree farm staff members will be glad to do this for you.
Tree farmer Charles Peltzer discusses tree safety and how to arrange and water the tree to keep it beautiful for the entire holiday season.

Prep the tree.

If you are not setting up the tree right away, set it in a bucket of water in a cool, shaded area. When you are ready to display it, cut an eighth to a quarter inch off of the stump to remove any sap seal that may have formed.

Pick a location.

Pick a spot out of direct sunlight and away from any heat source. A preferred location is a shady corner away from air ducts, fireplaces, lamps, televisions and windows.

Choose a stand.

There are a few different stands, but the easiest and most readily available one is the screw-in style.

Water the tree.

Gauge the tree's water needs during its first few days. The general rule is one quart for every one inch of diameter. Water from the tap works best. Use warm water for a particularly cold area. Additives are not necessary.

Other Tips

  • When trimming branches from the tree, do not cut the very top branch, or leader, unless it is absolutely necessary. Cutting it speeds up the drying process.

  • After Christmas, do not burn the tree as firewood because it will burn too hot. Check for a community tree pickup service or a disposal site for recycling.
