Q&A: Climate Zone

How can I tell what climate zone I live in?

• Follow the USDA climate zone system (10 zones) printed on the back of seed packets and catalogs. These zones are assigned according to winter temperatures.

• Follow the sunset climate zone system (45 zones) with a map key found in plant encyclopedias. This system determines which plants can grow in which areas, based on climate, terrain, sea level, etc.
