Drought Protection

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-513 -- More Projects »
When drought is threatening your landscape, follow master gardener Paul James' advice:
  • Don't overwater. Watering too much can actually cause more harm than good, because waterlogged soils can kill plants faster than drought. Maintain a regular watering schedule. Water a little longer than usual to deeply soak the soil, but don't get carried away.
  • Reduce or stop fertilizing, especially for turf grasses. A lot of plants slow their growth processes as a means of surviving drought and heat. Fertilizer forces them to grow at a time when they would rather rest.
  • Mulch well. Mulch moderates soil temperature and moisture.
  • Take care of yourself as well as your plants. Tackle yard work during the cooler times of the day, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks.
