Materials
- cedar mulch
- compost
- precision weeder
Background Information and Tips
- Remove weeds quickly and easily with a dandelion digger--simply insert the tool beneath the weed, twist and pull upward. (When removing actual dandelions, save any that haven't been sprayed with lawn chemicals or pesticide--then add them to salads for a tasty treat!)
- When reviewing the garden's condition, first look for areas to add new plants. Then, inspect existing perennials, clean up the surrounding areas and use pruners to remove any dead stems. Toss any prunings into the compost pile.
- To divide perennials, first lift them out of the ground and shake the soil loose. Then, simply divide the plant into sections, and re-plant in the desired areas.
- Before planting new seeds, first till the soil. Then, scatter the seeds, pat them gently into the ground and water thoroughly.
- Replenish containers with fresh potting soil and fill them with new plants as the weather permits.
- Remove any protective wrapping on trees to allow them to become acclimated to the warm spring temperatures.
