Project: Cold Frames

Grow It! : Episode GRW-201 -- More Projects »
Get a jump on gardening during the cold months by building a cold frame to protect tender plants and start seedlings. A cold frame is simply a miniature greenhouse that can be made inexpensively with scrap lumber and glass.

The most effective cold frame has a glass top installed at a 30-degree angle to take advantage of the sun's low position in the winter sky. On warm days it may be necessary to prop the lid an inch or so to let heat escape. On the coldest days, especially in northern climates, you may want to place straw or even a blanket around the cold frame for added insulation.
