Chemical-Free Weed Killer

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-222 -- More Projects »
Hosts John Greenlee and Jackie Cicchino explain how to kill weeds without the use of harsh chemicals:
  • Smother weeds with a thick layer of wet newspaper (dampening the paper will keep the sheets together). After the "mat" has blocked the sunlight for a few weeks, the weeds will be dead and the newspaper can be removed.
  • Follow the same steps described above, but use a sheet of black plastic held in place with bricks along the edges. (The heat that builds up under the plastic will bake the weeds in a few weeks.)
  • Use a dandelion digger to pry up weeds quickly and easily. Dandelion diggers are available in most hardware stores and home centers.
  • Pour salt on weeds that sprout up randomly throughout the yard. (This is especially effective for patches of weeds that can't be easily removed one at a time.)
  • Keep any bare spots (such as those reserved for plants) covered with mulch until it's time to plant; this will prevent weeds from invading the area.
