Plant Supports

Inside Dirt : Episode ISD-123 -- More Projects »
Though bamboo poles are traditionally used as stakes to support climbing plants, many other creative options are available. Host Michele Driscoll Alioto offers these ideas:
  • Bamboo trellises or obelisks add a nice architectural element with plants such as mandevilla.
  • Tall lichen-covered branches make good natural-looking supports for oncidium or dendrobium orchids. Mullein, thistle or pussy willow branches also work well for this purpose.
  • Living plants can be used as supports for other plants; for instance, a passionflower might be supported by a weeping fig.
  • For climbing or trailing plants, try using an unordinary support such as a dressmaker's model, an easel, a stepladder or a wooden stool.
