Planting Roses

Fix It Up! : Episode FIX-201 -- More Projects »
Jodi and Joe plant a rose bush. They talk about proper planting techniques and care for planted roses. After they're done planting, they cover common diseases and prevention techniques.

Planting Roses

1. The best time to plant roses is during the spring. Fall doesn't always allow enough time for the plant to establish its root system before potentially damaging cold weather.
2. Dig a hole twice the width of the container, and no deeper.
3. Add peat hummus to the soil.
4. Sprinkle a handful of cotton seed meal to the soil to promote strong root growth.
5. Remove the rose from the pot, and place in the hole.
6. Make sure the top of the soil line matches evenly with the top of the plant's ground line. Note: For extra protection during the winter seasons, plant the rose on a slight angle to shield the crown.
7. Fill the soil up around the plant and tamp down the dirt.
8. Create a water ring in the soil around the base of the plant to help facilitate watering.
9. Water the rose one to two times a day to help establish a healthy plant.
