Figure A
Host John Cretti shares a tip on improving the chances for success when starting plants from cuttings. Since cuttings often dry out before they have a chance to propagate, use two pots--one inside the other--to help retain essential moisture (figure A).

Materials

a relatively large planting pot without drainage holes
a porous pot, slightly smaller than the planting pot (common clay pots work well)
water
plastic saucer
wine cork
scissors
pre-moistened potting soil

Figure B
  • Fill the larger container (remember, no drainage holes) with pre-moistened potting soil.
  • Plug the bottom of the smaller porous container with a cork (cut the cork to size if necessary).
  • Inside the larger container, create a cavity in the center of the potting soil.
  • Place the porous clay pot into the soil, then fill this inner pot with water.
  • Place the cuttings in the soil around the perimeter of the inner pot.
  • Cover the container with a plastic dome or plastic bag to create a mini-greenhouse environment (figure B).
  • Allow the cuttings a few weeks to root.
