Transplanting Peonies

Rebecca's Garden : Episode REB-706 -- More Projects »
Fall is a great time to transplant your peonies. If they've been growing in one location longer than three to five years you probably should divide them at the same time. Here's how:
  1. Start by digging up the plant.

Figure A
  • Remove all the greenery (figure A).

    Figure B
  • Cut the crown up in several different pieces, making sure that each crown has at least three to five eyes (figure B).

  • Transplant these pieces with the eyes two inches below the soil.

That's it! It could take a couple of years before you see blooms again, so be patient. It will be worth the wait.
