Plants that make flowers or fruit need a lot of phosphorous. An inexpensive way to add this chemical to the soil is with chicken bones because they degenerate slowly. Break the bones into small pieces, dig a hole eight to 12 inches deep around the plant, and drop the bones in the ground once a season. Cover with bricks if you have animals that might dig them up.
