Environmental expert Michael Fritzen tells how to bring the smell of wildflowers into your home by making elegant fragrance wands and logs.

Lavender Wands

Materials:

25 long branches of fresh lavender
twist tie
1 yd. decorative ribbon
transparent tape
lavender oil

Steps:


  1. Gather 25 long branches of lavender. For optimum fragrance, cut the branches during mid-morning.

  • Hold the branches in a bundle and encase the flowers by bending the stems up from the bottom (figure A). Secure with a twist tie.

  • Set aside in a cool, dark spot for one to two weeks. Check occasionally for mold. If you see a brownish or blackish powder on the flowers or stems, throw the bundle out and start again.

  • Once the lavender has dried, weave decorative ribbon in and under the stems (figure B). Place transparent tape around the ribbon edge to prevent fraying and ease of handling.

  • When wand begins to lose its fragrance, crunch it between your fingers, or add a few drops of lavender oil.

  • If you're not into weaving, simply tie ribbon around a bundle of dried lavender and hang it upside down in a closet or elsewhere in your home for a naturally fragrant decorative accent (figure C).

    Fragrance Log

    Materials:

    pine cones or twigs
    lemon verbena
    rosemary
    thyme
    eucalyptus
    lavender
    natural twine (not dyed)

    Steps:


    1. Tie bundles of dried herbs or other fragrant plants with twine.

    2. Add to a smoldering fire to release their fragrance.
