Figure A

  • Have a journal to keep track of when you start planting and which combination of flowers you really like in your garden (figure A).

  • Make a small model of your garden by bringing the size down. For example, if your garden is 12 x 24 feet, then have a cardboard or foam core cut out that is 12 x 24 inches.

Figure B
  • With your model, the idea is to work around things that are already pre-existing. Glue on small rocks to represent the pathway in your garden, for instance. If there are trees in your garden, glue down dollhouse-size trees (figure B).

  • Small plastic apples are great for representing apple trees, and you could use small sticks with raffia to show where your tomatoes will be.

    Figure D
  • Use floral cutouts from seed catalogues and place them where you would like to have them in your garden (figure C).

  • Look around the house for small items that can represent plants, flowers, trees, dolls and even vegetables in your model garden (figure D).

  • Just so you do not forget what represents what, write it down in your gardening journal.
