Figure C
Dale Rohman, also known as "America's Flower Man," shows how to revitalize, redo and refill ordinary store-bought window boxes with natural treatments that will make them as appealing as the flowers they contain.

Materials:

store-bought window box
birch branches (from craft and flower shops, or you could gather your own)
strips of flat wood for inside of window box frame (strapping from a home center would also work)
drill and screws to assemble frame
screwdriver
pruning shears
variety of textures and heights in plants for the garden (use your favorites)
potting soil.

Steps:

  1. Gather birch branches to make the framework to fit an existing window box (figure A).

  2. Screw the frame together.

  3. Cut strips of flat wood for the inside of the box. Slip small branches between the frame of the box and put the wood strips inside.

  4. Prune the branches to even up the sides, then put the trimmed portion back into the side between the frame and the wooden strips.

  5. Tighten the strips with a screwdriver, pulling the branches tight against the frame in an upright position (figure B).

  6. Put store-bought window box (with soil) inside the frame you have created. Plant with a variety of colors, textures and heights, using the taller ones in the back (figure C).

* Note: If plants are root-bound or dry in the plastic container, put the plant on a 45-degree angle and tap it on a firm surface such as a stair step. The plant should pop right out.

Tips

  • Let your taste and personality guide your plant selections for the window box.

  • Window boxes make great herb gardens.
