Fun in the Backyard

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-355 -- More Projects »
Author Joey Green takes it outside to discuss fun yet practical tips for keeping the yard looking good and the plants green.
  • To fix a punctured hose, insert a round, wooden toothpick into the hole. The wood will swell from the moisture and fill the hole, thus eliminating the leak. Another option is to patch the hole with chewed chewing gum, which permanently seals the hole when it hardens.

  • Clean a dirty grill with a combination of one cup baking soda and one cup water. Apply with a wire brush. Wipe the grill with a clean cloth, then spray with nonstick cooking spray to prevent other food from sticking.

  • Fertilize the lawn with a combination of one cup of each of the following: anti-bacterial mouthwash, Epsom salt, liquid soap and ammonia to a quart jar. Top with a can of beer, then seal the jar and shake to combine. Transfer mixture to a hose-attached sprayer and use to fertilize up to 2,500 square feet of lawn. The chemical reaction created by the combination of these products will really revitalize the lawn.

  • For spot fertilizing around plants and young trees, bury used coffee grounds around their roots.

  • Cover a cardboard tube with honey to make a birdfeeder. Roll the tube in birdseed, then thread a string of dental floss through its opening and hang from a post or tree.
