Planting Around a Tree

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-224 -- More Projects »
Here, host John Greenlee discusses the advantages of planting around the base of a tree.

Why to plant around the base:

Beneath a tree's layer of bark lies a second layer called the cambium, which is a "pipeline" for water and nutrients.

  • If chunks of bark are torn off a tree by a mower or trimmer, the tree may be rendered unable to absorb what it needs to stay alive.
  • Damage to the bark or cambium exposes the tree to disease and insect problems that could eventually cause it to die.

Benefits of planting around the base:

  • Reduction in weeding chores
  • Increased moisture retention
  • Enhanced aesthetics

Suggestions for tree protection:

  • Mulches
  • Annuals
  • Perennials
  • Shrubs

(NOTE: When adding plants around the base of a tree, be sure to select varieties that will thrive in the amount of sun or shade afforded by the branches overhead.)
