Rare Native Plants

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-211 -- More Projects »
Disney horticulturist Wendy Andrew defines the term "native" as it refers to plants. She explains that about one-fifth of all native varieties are considered rare today, since they are now found only in small numbers. By most estimates, native plants encompass approximately 20,000 varieties that were growing in the United States before human inhabitance. Andrew also points out that many common garden favorites are actually exotics that have been introduced from other parts of the world, and explains that these varieties are alien to the native ecosystem.

Featured rare varieties:

  • Tickseed
  • Purple coneflower
  • Black-eyed susan
  • Loblolly bay
