Looking for an unusual plant to showcase on your deck or patio? Some of these hail from the tropics and would make great container plants. Note: If you grow patio plants and live in a windy climate, your plants may dry out quickly and need frequent watering. Check on them frequently.

The toothache plant (Spilanthes oleracea) is known to relieve toothaches when you chew its leaves. In its native tropics, its pungent leaves are more often used in salads.

Fiber optics grass (Scirpus cernuus) wants a moist, if not wet, environment. An ideal candidate for pondside, it's hardy down to the 20's F.

The shrimp plant (Justicia brandegeana) is an evergreen shrub in its native Central and South America, where it can grow up to three feet tall and wide. Frequently grown in the deep South, it attracts hummingbirds.

This terrestrial bromeliad is actually a pineapple. You can grow it on a patio and harvest edible fruit if your growing season is long enough; if not, grow it in your house. Be aware, though, these plants can cost up to $75, which makes for a very expensive pineapple.
