Ornamental grasses are probably the closest thing to low-maintenance plants you'll find, and they come in dozens of types, sizes and colors. There are grasses that will grow in full sun, full shade or somewhere in between, and they range anywhere from one to 10 feet or a little more in height. Once established, they require little care--just a trim of about six to eight inches in early spring. Certain grasses, such as maiden grass (genus Miscanthus), are almost always a sure bet. This China native comes in several sizes and varieties. The genus Pennesitum, native to Australia, is also a reliable, easy-care grass; dwarf fountain grass is a member of this genus.
