Environmental expert Michael Fritzen tells how to propagate pineapples.

  1. Use a pineapple that isn't very ripe. To check, tug on the leaves in the crown--they shouldn't come out too easily.

  2. Cut off the crown of the pineapple an inch from the top, and remove an inch of leaves closest to the body (see photo).

  3. Set the plant in a window to dry for seven to 10 days.

  4. Place the dried cutting in potting soil and a pot, and in a year’s time, you should have your own pineapple plant.
