Q&A: Sowing Grass Seed

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-405 -- More Projects »
Q: When is the best time to sow grass seed?

A: It depends on what kind of seed you are sowing. Cool-season grasses like bluegrass, fescue, and rye can be sown in the spring or fall, although in my experience, fall sowing seems to work better. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, St. Augustine, Buffalo, and zoysia should be sown when nighttime temperatures are consistently in the 70s.
