Grass-Cycling

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-103 -- More Projects »
Hundreds of cities and towns across the country have banned the curbside disposal of grass clippings because grass clippings represent as much as 50 percent of the solid waste that goes to landfills. That's why grass-cycling, the act of leaving grass clippings where they fall, is sweeping the country. Grass clippings can provide as much as one-third of a lawn's total nitrogen needs.

To start grass-cycling, a special mower is not needed. However, the newly designed mulching mowers, such as Scott's Lawn Pro, and several from Troybilt (800-767-5400), which cut and re-cut the clippings into tiny decomposed pieces thereby making the job easier, are now available from virtually every mower manufacturer.

Don't send bagged clippings to the landfill. Use them to create a compost pile, and in time those unwanted clippings, combined with other various organic materials, will be transformed into one of the finest soil amendments money can buy.
