Planting a Fragrant Walkway

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune

Some herbs will give off a burst of fresh scent when rubbed against or after a rain. To create a fragrant walkway, plant 'Lemon Frost' thyme, 'Hall's Woolly' thyme or other low-growing, aromatic herbs. When they fill in, they will spill over the steppingstones.

"The thyme can get out of control," warned Veronica Malone. "You need to regularly cut it back."

  1. Pick a sunny, bright area. Place steppingstones at least 2 inches apart so plants have room to grow.

  2. Dig holes 3 to 5 inches apart around the steppingstones. (If you don't have enough plants, line at least two sides of each stone with plants.) Place the herbs inside the holes.

  3. Fill in and around the plants with extra soil. Surround the stones and herbs with mulch to give visual definition to your aromatic walkway and help keep plants moist. As they mature, plants will encircle the stones.
