  • What windowsill would be complete without an herb garden? And when he ran out of windowsills, Harelson added even more gardening space with special gravel trays (figure A).
  • Gotu kola is an uncommon herb from the Orient (figure B). A bitter-tasting herb, gotu kola grows very quickly and can transform an ordinary salad into an extraordinary dish.
  • To spice up your small space with color, grow an ornamental pepper plant (figure C).
  • Chives are one of the simplest herbs to grow. These edible herbs do well in a kitchen windowsill where they get plenty of light and are close at hand for cooking.
  • When shopping for herbs, look for garden stores or nurseries that list the Latin name of the plant. This is a good indicator that you're getting the right variety. When buying herbs, check the plants for pest problems or crowded root systems.
  • Use organic fertilizers like fish emulsion and seaweed sparingly. Although fertilizers make the plants beautiful to look at, the less fertilizer used on an herb, the better it will taste.
  • If you want to grow herbs indoors, but are concerned that the environmental conditions are too dry, consider purchasing a humidifier with a fan to circulate extra moisture.
