Graber

Wadsworth-Longfellow

This Portland treasure can be found behind the former home of Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow, one of America's most respected poets. Amazingly enough, a few plantings remain from the famous lyricist's original garden, including a calicanthus bush and a mock orange. Brick paths are lined with hostas for all to enjoy while much smaller dirt paths prove big enough only for small children. Benches provide restful spots for contemplation and give visitors a chance to relax in this garden, a charming ode to Portland's past.

Graber

Michal Graber's English country-style garden twists and turns throughout four acres of Maine countryside. This garden was barren 40 years ago but now overflows with a colorful burst of perennials. An antique barn fits comfortably in the pastoral setting. But a different country look is found hidden in the woods--a peaceful Japanese garden built in memory of Michal's parents.

Hamilton House

The gardens at this historic home lie on the banks of the beautiful Salmon Falls River. The gardens reflect the vision of Emily and Elise Tyson, a mother and daughter who traveled to Europe in the early 1900s and brought back more than just memories; their garden ideas come directly from estates they visited. A cottage garden is the newest edition and beyond the cottage's back door, a set of wrought iron furniture allows visitors to soak in the striking views of the river beyond.

Elowitch

Art dealers Rob and Annette Elowitch have created a living gallery in their own backyard. In this city lot, dramatic sculptures find a home amid colorful hydrangea and delicate roses. But it's not always the art that takes center stage; the Elowitch's dog Buzz attracts his share of attention by digging up flowers that Rob and Annette so patiently plant--and replant.
