When it comes to backyard gardening, Robbie Arber's efforts literally define 'grass roots!' She brought her property to life by planting thousands of ornamental grasses to form a beautiful garden. And here, the grass isn't always greener--Robbie's grasses include colors such as blue and dark brown. Behind her home, a picturesque waterfall and pond lie beside miniature umbrellas of cypress, soaking up the Vancouver moisture.
Hobbs Garden
This garden is a California dream transplanted north of the border. A 1930s-style fountain decorates a corner where fushia blossom overhead and dangle like teardrops. Sandstone paths wander beside the Mediterranean home and into a sequestered courtyard where a garage wall is disguised with Virginia creeper and variegated ivy. A private patio opens onto picturesque views of Vancouver, backed by the majestic mountains of British Columbia.
Sun Yat-Sen Garden
Hidden behind a great wall, the Sun Yat-Sen garden is modeled after those of Chinese scholars whose city gardens were private and contemplative retreats. Built in 1986 as a joint venture between China and Canada, the garden was painstakingly created by Chinese craftsmen using only traditional materials. Elements of rock, water, architecture and plants blend in balance and harmony. High above the garden, the Ting pavilion has a curved eave that resembles the phoenix bird, a symbol of not only the Chinese empress, but all Chinese women
