Peckerwood Garden

Rienzi Garden

Houston's Rienzi Garden is an artful blend of the well-mannered and the marsh. Situated on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou, the garden offers a surprising blend of lush, natural landscapes and formal garden design. Once the property of Harris and Carroll Masterson, this garden is paved with family history--literally. Carroll's mother carried the bricks with her every time she moved, and Carroll later inherited the bricks that now pave the garden's walk. The pathway and the rest of the garden are open to visitors as part of Houston's Museum of Fine Arts.

Peckerwood Garden

Woodpeckers ran the show in this Houston garden 30 years ago. The insistent birds had taken over the 19-acre area now known as Peckerwood Gardens. John Fairey, entranced by the stream that runs through the property, decided it was worth rescuing. He planted cypress trees, iris and a dry garden that features a rare agave known to grow only in a small area of Mexico.

An Anniversary Garden

Gene and Susan Vaughn's anniversary garden is a reflection of their enduring love. They know it sounds schmaltzy, but as Gene says, "It's the truth." The Vaughns wanted to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a garden party but soon realized that their backyard couldn't live up to the significance of the event. Instead, they chose to go to England. It was an inspired decision: amid some of the world's most beautiful gardens, the Vaughns gleaned ideas and objects to create their dream garden.
