Fullerton Arboretum
Fullerton, California
Beauty abounds in a quiet corner of California State University in Fullerton. Twenty-six acres are dedicated to the arboretum and feature four major collections from temperate to tropical. In the rare fruit grove, trees drip with pomegranates, kiwi and a unique variety of citrus called Buddha's hand.
Clark Botanic Garden
Albertson, New York
It's hard to imagine today, but before Long Island became prime suburban real estate, large stretches of the island were covered with prairies and bogs. This 12-acre escape into the wild is free to the public and features many native and exotic plants. There's even a man-made bog that gives a second chance to plants that lost ground.
Mounts Botanical Garden
West Palm Beach, Florida
The Mounts Botanical Garden is home to an array of tropical plants from around the world. With 14 acres, Mounts is not only Palm Beach County's largest public garden, it's also its oldest. Here, tropical trees sport fruits that look like sausage links, and even the giant Jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) can grow to three feet long.
