Mt. Vernon, Arizona Sonora and Burbank Garden

Great American Gardens : Episode GAG-210 -- More Projects »
Mount Vernon
Mt. Vernon, Virginia

At George Washington's estate, the gardens look like they did in Washington's day, thanks to some archaeological excavations. At this 500-acre estate on the Potomac River, the public can enjoy a naturalistic landscape that had once been formal. In the view of the bowling green, there is even a hidden wall that kept domestic animals from invading the pleasure grounds.

Arizona Sonora Desert Museum
Tucson, Arizona

Cooling breezes, rustling palms and exotic flowers may lull visitors into thinking that they're on an island paradise. Instead, these delights are part of the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. This 21-acre museum is a zoo, a botanical garden and a natural history museum all rolled into one. The endangered Mexican gray wolf and the more common black-tailed prairie dog live side by side with prickly pear, Joshua trees and sahuaro cactus.

Luther Burbank Home and Garden
Santa Rosa, California

This home and garden tucked behind a white picket fence was once the living laboratory of one of America's greatest horticulturists, Luther Burbank. Today visitors can tour the 1-1/2 acres to see several of Burbank's inventions, including a plumcot, the Shasta daisy, and a cactus without thorns. One of his most famous inventions was a blight-resistant potato, what we know today as the russet .
