A lawn mower engine needs regular maintenance for optimal performance.
Problem: A lawn mower engine, just like a car engine, needs regular maintenance for optimal performance; otherwise, it will probably develop problems.

Solution : The maintenance required to keep your mower in good condition is easy. With regular maintenance, your mower should provide several years of good service.

* Basic maintenance includes changing the spark plug, the air filter, and the oil.

Replace the spark plug
  1. Leave it out of the engine until the work is complete so there's no chance the engine could start while completing the work.
  2. This is equivalent to turning the power off when working on electrical projects.
  3. When all other work is completed, replace the old spark plug with a new one.

Replace the air filter

  1. The casing for the filter might be located on the side or the top, depending on the model of lawnmower being serviced.
  2. Remove the casing for the filter and dispose of the old filter.
  3. Clean any debris from inside the casing with a brush, and install the new filter.

Change the oil

  1. Locate the drain plug; it is often underneath the mower's housing.
  2. Drain the oil, replace the drain plug and refill the oil reservoir.

Maintain the blade

  1. Be sure that when working with the blade, the spark plug has been removed so there is no chance the engine could somehow start.
  2. Periodically remove the blade and have it sharpened. When re-installing it, be sure the sharp edge faces the proper direction. In some cases the blade may need to be replaced.
  3. Check the underside of the mower deck often, and keep it as clean as possible for maximum efficiency.

Maintain the gas tank

When gas sits dormant in a gas tank for a long time, it can get stale. To counteract this, use a gas stabilizer or drain the gas tank and carburetor before storing the mower for the winter.
