Figure B
Home-maintenance expert Darcy Westlind stops by TIPical Mary Ellen to share ideas with host Mary Ellen Pinkham on how to turn an old armoire into a workstation for potting plants.
  • The interior of an armoire should be able to hold most of the gardening essentials. Keep heavy items such as buckets of soil at the bottom.

  • Put some pockets inside the armoire to hold small, sharp tools such as shears (figure A). Rip the back pockets off a pair of jeans and attach them inside the door of the armoire with a drill and screws.

  • Keep track of what's planted in the garden by tacking seed packets inside the armoire (figure B). Write information such as when the plants were planted and where they 're located on the packets.

  • It's also easy to save space at the bottom of the armoire to keep garden shoes. This way it is easy to slip them off and leave the dirt behind before going inside.

  • Mount racks and hooks on the interior of the armoire to hang longer tools.

  • Put hooks in the top of the inside of the armoire and hang flowers from them to dry.

  • If desired, paint the outside with an oil-based paint. With a little imagination, there are many possibilities for an old armoire.
