Home repair expert Henry Harrison shares some tips for mounting a garden hose rack on a brick pillar. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

drill with carbide-tipped bit
nut driver
marker
safety glasses
hose storage reel
lag screws and anchors

Steps:

1. Hold the hose rack in place and mark location for mounting holes (figure A). When attaching something like this to a brick wall or pillar, try to insert screws into the mortar. This makes it easier to patch the holes if the rack is removed.

2. Put on safety glasses and use a carbide drill bit to drill the holes out to match the size of your lag sleeves or anchors. Hold a sleeve up to the bit and mark the bit with a piece of tape so you know how far to drill in (figure B).

3. Place the lag sleeves in the holes and place the hose rack back in position. The sleeves are hinged at one end to allow the opposite end to expand (figure C). Insert the sleeves so the hinged end is facing out.

4. Use the nut driver to install the lag bolts in position.
