A mailbox mounted in the garden is a handy place to keep small tools, gloves and a garden journal. And you can even attach accessories. The flag on the mailbox can support a rain gauge. When you want to empty the gauge, simply lower the flag. You can also mount a cup holder under the mailbox to keep a cold beverage close at hand.
Trekking back and forth from the garden to the shed or house to fetch tools or gardening accessories can be frustrating, but it can also be avoided. Here, host John Cretti shares a great tip for easy-access, tool storage--a mailbox in the garden!

Materials

  • post
  • mailbox
  • tools to be stored
  • rainfall measure

Installing a Tool Storage Mailbox

  • First, choose a convenient space in the garden where the mailbox can be positioned. Next, select a mailbox that suits the style of the home or garden and anchor a sturdy post in the desired spot.
  • Mount the mailbox securely on the post and decorate the exterior as desired; consider planting a vine at the base that will eventually grow up the post. Next, place hand tools such as trowels, cultivators, dandelion diggers and gloves inside. (This is also a great place to keep a garden journal.) Close the door of the mailbox to protect the contents from the elements.
  • Attach a rain gauge to the metal mailbox flag to monitor rainfall. To empty the gauge, simply lower the flag!
  • Mount a cup holder to the post for those much-needed gardening breaks.

(Note: Rain gauges and posts are available at most garden centers and building supply stores.)
