Q: It's already snowing here in Maine. Are there de-icers I can use on my driveway that won't harm my lawn and nearby plants?

A: Excess salt, which inevitably runs off driveways and other paved surfaces and gets into the soil, is toxic to plants; however, you can buy environmentally friendly de-icers that don't contain salt, yet do a good job of melting snow and ice.
